• What It Is, and Who Needs It.
UDF™ (Universal Disk Format™) is a platform-independent file system which is particularly useful on optical media. Adaptec UDF Volume Access is a UDF 1.5-compliant File System. You need it if you wish to read closed Adaptec DirectCD™ discs in a CD-ROM drive. It will not enable you to read open DirectCD™ discs.
Note: ‘closed’ discs are sometimes referred to as ‘finalized’ or ‘finished’ discs.
• How to Install
Drag the extension file, which looks like this:
onto your System Folder icon. The Mac OS will ask if you want to put this file in the Extensions folder. Click OK, then restart your computer.
You can tell if was installed by observing the icons drawn on your computer’s screen at startup. The icon shown above will appear while your computer is starting up. If a large red cross is drawn through the icon, something went wrong with the installation. In this case a dialog will eventually appear which may help you to diagnose the problem.
• Minimum System Requirements
Any Macintosh or MacOS-compatible computer running System 7.6 or later.
• Compatibility with CD-ROM Drives and Drivers
Some CD-ROM drives cannot read DirectCD™ or other packet-written discs.
Some CD-ROM drivers offer a feature called ‘read-ahead caching’ or simply ‘read-ahead’. You must disable this feature in order to read packet-written discs. Consult the documentation for your CD-ROM driver to find how to do this.
Note: Apple CD-ROM and Toast CD-Reader do not offer read-ahead caching so you don’t need to disable anything for these.

• Adaptec UDF Volume Access and (Apple’s) UDF Volume Access
Mac OS 8.1 includes an Apple extension called “UDF Volume Access”. This supports volumes written to the UDF 1.02 specification. It cannot read DirectCD discs. Adaptec UDF Volume Access supports UDF 1.5.
The two extensions can peacefully coexist.
• Adaptec UDF Volume Access and DirectCD
DirectCD’s file system contains all the functions of Adaptec UDF Volume Access. If DirectCD is installed, you need not install Adaptec UDF Volume Access in order to read UDF CDs in your CD-ROM drive.
• Special Files and Folders
Some files from other operating systems (e.g. a Unix soft link) have no usable representation under MacOS; Adaptec UDF Volume Access uses placeholder icons to represent them which appear to be empty data files.
